The tradition of celebrating romantic love on St Valentine's Day dates back to the fourteenth century; by Victorian times factories had sprung up to mass produce paper valentines, decorated with lace and ribbon and mailed anonymously via the new postal service. In the Middle Ages young men and women would draw names from a bowl to learn the identity of their future lover and would wear their names on their sleeves for week, giving rise to the modern saying 'to wear your heart on your sleeve'. Nowadays couples prefer to send a charming and tender card, signed or otherwise, along with a carefully chosen Valentine's Day gift.
