Mothers Day – say thank you to your lovely Mum!
Aren't Mums great? You come home as a teenager with your hair spiked and dyed purple, looking absolutely ridiculous, and your Mum still loves you. She puts up with temper tantrums, nappies, broken sleep and teen sulks. Eventually she sees you leave home. But she never forgets you. She will always miss you. And she'll be there for you whatever happens. Mums deserve the very best. And Mothers Day is everyone's favourite time of year to say thank you to our lovely Mums.
Did you know that Mothers Day was originally called Mothering Sunday? In the UK Mothering Sunday tends to fall on the fourth Sunday of Lent. So because Easter moves around every year, Mothers Day does too. Make a note so it doesn't catch you out! In the UK mothers day has very different origins to America. In the UK, from the 1600s to the First World War, Mothering Sunday was the one day children working away from home as servants were allowed time off to visit their mothers. These days it is all about children giving gifts and cards to their Mums to say thank you... just for being there.
In the USA, Mothers Day was created in reaction to the brutality of the Civil War. Going back a lot further, there were Mothers Day-type ceremonies and celebrations in ancient Egyptian and ancient Roman times too. So celebrating your mum is nothing new. Our greeting card organisers are a particularly big seller and make a fantastic gift for Mothers Day. We also have a lovely thank you for being my mother little gift book that she'll cherish for years to come.
